Background

Institute of Oceanography and Maritime Studies (INOCEM) was established with the objective to support and promote high quality research, training and outreach in oceanography and maritime studies. INOCEM is expected to become a center of excellence in IIUM not only for research, development and commercialization, but also to become leading institute on the educo-tourism activities in east coast region. With its beach facing the South China Sea, and adjacent to Pahang Tua River, the institute offers a great diversity of marine life creatures, floras and faunas.

The establishment of the “Marine School” concept would offer the opportunity to combine leisure with guided experiential learning and feel, touch, hear and see the wonders of marine-related environment around INOCEM. It is an effort to blend education with tourism in learning experience that takes place in institute environment, natural landscape, knowledge and staff-students’ community. Such effort also can be considered as responsible travel to natural areas that is not also conserve the environment but sustains the well-being of the local people as well.
