What is SCITECH?

SCITECH is a program that exposes knowledge of science and technology to less privileged students, particularly those with special needs and limited exposure to science. Such a program has been organized by the Engineering Students’ Society, External Affairs Bureau of Engineering (ENGINIUS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), since 2019. The program has received an outstanding response from school students, teachers, and parents, especially those from the B40 group and indigenous communities.

Initiated in 2019 with the involvement of indigenous primary school students, the success of SCITECH has continued through SCITECH 2.0, SCITECH 3.0, SCITECH 4.0, SCITECH 5.1, SCITECH 5.2, SCITECH 6.0, SCITECH 7.1, SCITECH 7.2, and SCITECH 8.0 from 2020 to 2023. These events successfully engaged less privileged students, including indigenous children, orphans, and those from low-income families in the Lembah Kelang region. Communities such as Pusat Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Kampung Baru HICOM, PPR Gombak Setia, Rumah Anak Yatim Raudhatul Nurr Jannah, and Rumah Anak Yatim Darul Ilmi were involved.

In recognition of the previous SCITECH programs, the initiative has received various achievements at the university level, including the Quality Award 2023, where SCITECH won The Most Participative Flagship Award (SCITECH 6.0) and the IIUM Community Engagement Awards (National) and the Science and Technology Program Leader Award (SCITECH 7.1) at the Student Activity Award 2022 (STEWARD 2022). With numerous achievements and successful programs, SCITECH has been recognized as a flagship project at the university level, known as IIUM Flagship 2.0 (2022) and IIUM Flagship 3.0 (2023).

SCITECH aligns with Malaysia’s national policy, emphasizing the significance of Science and Technology for the attainment of an inclusive and sustainable developed nation. The vision of “Malaysia Madani,” led by the 10th Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, positions creative capacity as one of the six foundational pillars. Malaysia is unwavering in its dedication to fostering a forward-thinking, innovative, and progressive society. SCITECH actively supports the objectives of the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (DSTIN), contributing to Malaysia’s advancement as a more competitive and efficient nation through a robust foundation in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).
